The turning point in human history came not through the rise of an empire or the invention of a weapon, but through a moment of divine revelation — in a quiet cave, to a man deep in thought. This was the moment when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the first words of the Quran in the Cave of Hira, marking the beginning of his prophethood and the birth of Islam.
Seeking Truth in a Time of Darkness
Before prophethood, Muhammad (PBUH) often retreated to the Cave of Hira, located in the mountains near Mecca. Troubled by the widespread injustice, idol worship, and moral decay in Meccan society, he would spend days in isolation, meditating and seeking guidance. He was a man in search of truth, long before he knew he was chosen to deliver it.
He was 40 years old when the first revelation occurred.
The Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr)
One night during the month of Ramadan, in the year 610 CE, something extraordinary happened. As he sat in the cave, a figure appeared — it was the angel Jibreel (Gabriel). He embraced the Prophet and commanded:
"Iqra!" (Read/Recite)
Muhammad (PBUH), startled and unlettered, replied, “I cannot read.” The angel repeated the command two more times, then revealed the first verses of the Quran:
"Read in the name of your Lord who created —
Created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).
Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous —
Who taught by the pen —
Taught man that which he knew not."
(Surah Al-‘Alaq, 96:1–5)
These verses emphasized knowledge, creation, and divine guidance — all core foundations of the Islamic worldview.
The Prophet’s Fear and Khadijah’s Support
Shaken and overwhelmed by the experience, the Prophet rushed down the mountain and returned home to Khadijah (RA), trembling. He pleaded, “Cover me! Cover me!” After calming him down, he told her what had happened.
Khadijah (RA), full of wisdom and faith, reassured him:
“By Allah, He will never disgrace you. You maintain family ties, bear others’ burdens, help the poor, serve guests generously, and assist those in distress.”
She then took him to her cousin, Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a Christian scholar. Waraqah confirmed that the being who visited Muhammad (PBUH) was indeed the same angel who brought revelation to Moses. He told the Prophet:
“You are the Prophet of this nation.”
A Mission Begins
From that night forward, the life of Muhammad (PBUH) changed forever. He was now the Messenger of Allah, entrusted with a mission that would span 23 years of revelation and transform the world spiritually, socially, and morally.
The first revelation in Cave Hira was not just a personal moment of awakening — it was the spark that lit the eternal flame of Islam.
